The demon then grasped the crescent moon and began to scythe it through
the sky. First fell Mizar, then Al Shira, then the stars of Al Babadur,
called the Strong One, but the demon was stronger this night. He cut and
sliced his way through the heavens in an insane fury and before too long
the desert hills far as the eye could see were glittered with glowing,
dying stars, and the sky was black as pitch. Except for Addib, the star
around which all the others circle, who shone as bright and steady as
ever. This star now began to shudder and shake as the demon hacked at its
roots with the glowing, sharp moon. What happened next is unclear —
there are conflicting reports, and divergent schools of thought. Some say
the moon at that point became agitated, leaped and seized the demon
around the neck and bit off his head. Others say djinn from the eastern
desert pulled the demon down by his many legs for reasons of their own.
