I'm acting out, bodily, the zeitgeist of my land. Four year dry
conditions will most likely give way to an El Nino here come fall. Which,
though it means bad things to insurance companies and motorists and so
forth...goddamn, I love El Nino! Lightning and thunder and pouring rain
and shocking cloud tableaux and surf and mud and rivers in the streets!

Anything to mitigate this bland arid sunlight. This bland and aerial
sunlight. Sunlight flashing off the glass and aerials of the cars
cruising by. The sunwashed filters of the cinder and chromium blocks. All
the hot sidewalks and all the black asphalts and all the black ashpots
and all the black blackblocks. All the smash backblocks, basking in the
black'ning sun'.

The sun of the Sung dynasty was no worse than this! the suns of the
steppes and the lonely old christians were no worse than this! the suns
of the manchu and the suns of the pushtu were no worse than this! why,
the sun that cracked the persian stones, the sun that cracked the
phoenician blocks, the sun that cured the caspian gates, these suns and
many others were no worse than this!
